Powering Britain

The UK generates its electricity in a variety of ways. Here is a list of how we are powered as of January 2021.

Renewables make up around 27% of supply and these include, Wind (17%), Biomass (5%), Solar (4%) and Hydro (1%).

Combined Cycle Gas Turbines make up for 47% of energy production with Nuclear at 13%, Coal is at 6% and roughly 5% imported from France on interconnections. The last few percent are from other interconnects etc.

Combined Cycle Gas Turbines use Natural Gas to power a Turbine which turns a Generator. A second system uses the heat to produce steam which is used to turn a turbine which powers a generator. There are 39 CCGT power stations in the UK.

Nuclear Power Stations use a Uranium nuclear reaction to produce heat. This is used to heat water to produce steam which turns a steam turbine which drives a generator to produce electricity. The output from these is more constant than other power generation. Fluctuations usually indicate maintenance, refuelling or problems. There are currently 8 Nuclear power stations in the UK.

Coal stations burn coal to produce heat. This is used to heat water to produce steam which turns a steam turbine which drives a generator to produce electricity. There are currently 9 Coal power stations in the UK. The current Governments plan is to shutdown all coal stations by 2025.

In peak demand periods the national grid has to ask for further energy production from other small suppliers who run up grid connected generators and gas turbines to assist.

This means that we are very susceptible to energy shortages going forward, especially with all the new car charging stations required for an ever growing electric vehicle population.

Having Critical Power Protection has never been more important to businesses of all sizes. This is where TSE Power can assist in ensuring you are set continue in business without any power issues.
